What should we teach?

The decision on what to teach is a tough one, no doubt. We need to find a balance between what the government says we should teach (Diseños Curriculares and Núcleos de Aprendizaje Prioritarios), what we can teach considering our students, what we really believe we should teach and what publishers suggest through textbooks… OMG!

In this video I explore the idea that we should teach the small stuff, the big stuff and the real stuff.

What do you think about this? Feel free to leave your comments here ;)

  1. Awesome and clear!
I believe the real stuff needs to consider English as a tool for the real world and this varies from student to student, ranging from passing a test, effectively communicating during an online meeting or "surviving" as a tourist in an English-speaking country. In order to do so, I believe exposure to authentic material is essential as well as encouraging students to dare to produce the language beyond mistakes and errors, but trusting the intentions to be put across.

  2. Thanks, Agus :) I agree with you. What we should teach depends a lot on what students need, as you say. But in all those cases you mentioned they need strategies, metacognition, an intercultural background and a lot more. That's what we should focus on, don't you think?

    1. Definí! Now that you mention it I've perceived that I tend to do it with students who are preparing for FCE. My lessons aim at helping them come up with strategies to learn how to learn!
